Back in the summer of 2010, my dad, sister, uncle, and I completed a Mt. Whitney trip. We started at Cottonwood Lakes trail head and over several days, made our way to Mt. Whitney. This route is less crowded but much longer (37 miles total) than the popular Mt. Whitney Portal trail. We did it in 3 nights/4 days.
The first night we camped at High Lake.

We camped at Guitar Lake the third night of our trip before ascending Mt. Whitney.

The next day we got an early start and made it to the top of Mt. Whitney, about 5 miles from Guitar Lake (about a 3,000 foot climb) and then hiked down to Whitney Portal to close out our trip. From the summit to the Mt. Whitney trail head it is about an 11 mile hike with about 6,000 foot descent. That was a LONG day.
We made it! Mt. Whitney elevation 14,505 feet |

We are planning on doing this back-packing trip again this summer. Looking back at these photos is getting me excited to do this again! These photos are from my pre-DSLR era.
