Chapter Five: The Shack

"The Shack"
When I finished college in 2010, I was determined to make my way to Mammoth. In June 2010, I began searching online for jobs in the Eastern Sierra. I had just finished my teaching credential so I applied for a teaching job in the area but I did not get it. I began looking in the Mammoth Times job section. On a trip to Mammoth with my family, I saw an ad for a front desk position at a lodge in Lee Vining (30 miles north of Mammoth). I called the number and arranged for an interview.

A few weeks later my sister, Kara, and I came back to the Eastern Sierra for my interview. We camped in my car at the Shady Rest campground. We explored the area and then headed to Lee Vining in the afternoon.

Trail run from Green Creek to Virginia Lakes

Running past East Lake
"I always loved running - it was something you could do by yourself, and under your own power. You could go in any direction, fast or slow as you wanted, fighting the wind if you felt like it, seeking new sights just on the strength of your feet and the courage of your lungs."
~Jesse Owens

This past summer my friend, Jess, and I did some amazing trail runs. The most challenging was our run from the Green Creek trail head to Virginia Lakes.

Hike to Green Lake and East Lake

"Come to the woods, for here is rest. There is no repose like that of the green deep woods. Here grow the wallflower and the violet. The squirrel will come and sit upon your knee, the logcock will wake you in the morning. Sleep in forgetfulness of all ill. Of all the upness accessible to mortals, there is no upness comparable to the mountains."
~John Muir

This summer I hiked with my friends Kelly and Jess. In June we hiked from the Green Creek trail head to Green Lake and then continued onto East Lake. The hike was a total of 10 miles round trip and we gained 1,700 feet in elevation. From the trail head it is about 3 miles to Green Lake and then 1.5 miles on to East Lake.

Lundy Canyon Hike

"We are now in the mountains and they are in us, kindling enthusiasm, making every nerve quiver, filling every pore and cell of us."
~John Muir

The morning of September 20th, I set out for Lundy Canyon with my sister in-law Ashley, her husband Steve, and their friends, Tiffany and Thomas. I would recommend this hike to anyone looking for a moderate hike. We hiked a little over 2 miles in and climbed a total of 891 feet.

The drive to the trail head alone was breath-taking.

Horse Creek Hike

"Walk away quietly in any direction and taste the freedom of the mountaineer. Camp out among the grasses and gentians of glacial meadows, in craggy garden nooks full of nature's darlings. Climb the mountains and get their good tidings, Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees. The winds will blow their freshness into you and the storms their energy, while cares will drop off like autumn leaves. As age comes on, one source of enjoyment after another is closed, but nature's sources never fail."
~ John Muir

A few weeks ago I went on a hike up Horse Creek Trail out of Twin Lakes in Bridgeport with my brother-in-law, Steve, and his dog Hailey. The leaves were just beginning to shift from bright green to shades of yellow and orange.

Sierra's proper introduction... a year late.

"Petting, scratching, and cuddling a dog could be as soothing to the mind and heart as deep meditation and almost as good for the soul as prayer."

~Dean Koontz

It has been exactly one year since my last post. I think I need to catch you up on Foxey's adventures... and introduce you to the new addition: Sierra!
