Aspen covered trail. |
Bouncing along in my CRV up Green Creek Road, Foxey was
riding in the front seat panting and yelping with untamed eagerness. Her dark
eyes scanned out the front window and brightened with enthusiasm as critters
scampered in front of the vehicle. The dirt road twisted as we gradually gained
elevation. Foxey’s excitement seemed to increase with every creature that
scurried in front of us.
. We came to a grassy opening and turned onto an unmarked
path. Savoring the beauty as we drove alongside Sinnamon Meadows, I stopped to
gaze at the golden light of the afternoon softly brushing the grass in the field.

The road continued, but soon became uneven and deeply
rutted. Autumn in the Sierras is an enchanting season, arriving on a crisp
wind, transforming the leaves into an assortment of golden hues, but slipping
away as rapidly as it came, dulling the vibrant colors to a muddy brown.
Foxey and I trekked among the shivering aspen trees. Pausing
for a moment in the aspen grove, we listened to the foliage rustling in the
breeze. Beams from the setting sun lit the multi-colored aspen leaves to
blazing shades. So bright were the intense colors, like after sneaking a peak
at the sun, I could still see the vivid yellow, carroty orange, and crimson red
floating in my mind’s eye. Rambling along the dirt path, unexpectedly the
peaceful setting invaded my core, injecting a thrill as if I entered the
artwork of a master painter. Today captured the soul of Sierra fall in
Sinnamon Meadows. Sitting among the trees, listening to the stories the aspen
were singing, a quote came to mind:
“Oh, these vast, calm, measureless mountain days, inciting
at once to work and rest! Days in whose light everything seems equally divine,
opening a thousand windows to show us God.”

Imagining the excitement of the creator speaking the glorious
surrounding into being, the joy found in crafting such a magnificent pallet, my
aspen sanctuary coaxed a spiritual adoration unlike any house of worship. Even
Foxey appeared to settle out of reverence for the moment.
